The Mark Bandy Exhibit

Specimens in one of the cases in Harvey Ingham are on loan from Mark Bandy.  He was a friend of Halver Straight and an honorary member of the Central Iowa Mineral Society.

He received his B.A. from Drake University in 1922 and later earned an international reputation as a mining engineer and economic geologist. His knowledge helped tremendously with the identification and labeling of specimens left to CIMS by Mr. Straight. When the American and Midwest Federations held their convention in Des Moines in July 1962 at the Veteran’s Auditorium, Bandy spoke at the opening.  The title of his speech was “Hal Straight, the Geologist.”  On the first day of the convention, a grand opening for the Straight Collection was held for invited guests.  About 100 individuals from over 13 states attended.

Mark Bandy’s collection consists of a variety of minerals, mostly from locations abroad.
