He served as the president of the CIMS, as well as the president of the Midwest Federation of Mineral Societies from 1950-1951. A few months after Straight’s death, the CIMS learned that he had willed his entire collection to the organization, with the exception of a few pieces for Straight’s family. The club members discussed where to house the collection and it was finally agreed to house it at Drake University.
The task of cataloging, packing and moving the collection was very time-consuming, since the original cabinets were included, as well. The club also built many new cases. Each specimen was washed before being tagged with an identification number and then coated with a clear lacquer. The society used the Dana System to organize the collection, and then all members worked to label the collection. |
