history

At first members received post card notices of meetings; these were later replaced by a small bulletin. On October 1950 members received Number 1 of Volume 1 of "News Nuggets" from Central Iowa Mineral Society; postage was still only 2 cents. This excellent newsletter is educational and enjoyable. The News Nuggets has always been published monthly, except July and August. Through this publication CIMS members keep in touch with other rock hounds and affiliated national organizations. Members have an opportunity to read, and may submit, articles of interest.

From the first, Central Iowa Mineral Society was, and continues to be, a non-profit organization that aims to benefit the community and promote the appreciation and study of minerals, fossils, geology and related topics. Early club members were enthusiastic and organized and enjoyed social gatherings. They were eager to learn and to share their hobby with the community; members made presentations to civic groups and to schools.
