The organization that is now known as Central Iowa Mineral Society was organized in the spring of 1946. In a newspaper article, January 26, 1946, Dorothy Hays expressed her desire that a mineral club be formed and invited those interested to her home to view her collection. The following week Frank Sadilek issued his own "open house" invitation for the purpose of forming that club. Officers pro tem were chosen; they were President C.W. Yaggy, Secretary Dorothy Hays and Treasurer Dr. Arnold Smythe.
Meetings were held the first year in the YMCA lounge on the first Friday of the month. At the first meeting, March 8, 1946, the officers pro tem were accepted and Frank Sadilek was chosen as vice president. Organized as Central Iowa Mineral Club at the first meeting, March 8, 1946, it was incorporated as Central Iowa Mineral Society on May 23, 1954.
